Diabetes is a common and serious disease in Kenya and around the world. It is estimated that one-third of those with type 2 diabetes are unaware of their condition. Because type 2 diabetes often has no symptoms, early detection may help people avoid the more serious complications of the disease, such as chronic hyperglycemia, which is linked to long-term damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, and blood vessels. Undiagnosed type 2 diabetes puts people at a much higher risk of stroke, coronary heart disease, and peripheral vascular disease. Diabetes patients are also more likely to have abnormal cholesterol, high blood pressure, and obesity.
